The final week of 2021 was a lot of treadmill running due to dangerously low temperatures/ wind chill advisories in the Twin Cities. There’s no shame in running on the treadmill- it’s still running, it’s still beneficial, and it still counts. However, it doesn’t make for a very interesting weekly recap, ha!
Monday: 6 treadmill miles before work, 8:45 min/mile
Stacked up several core classes on the Peloton app after work: 2×10 min core for runners with Becs + 15 min stacking stuffer with Callie = 35 minutes of core.
Tuesday: Long treadmill workout! 20 min easy, 15 min at 8:15, 3 min jog, 15 min at 8, 3 min jog, 10 min at 7:45, 3 min jog, 10 min at 7:30, cool down to 11 miles. I generally can tough out the treadmill, but this one just felt…long. But I got it done.

Wednesday: Another long treadmill run, 10 easy miles, 9:20 min/mile, 30 minute yoga flow after work on the Peloton app.
Thursday: With a bit of a ‘warm-up’ in the forecast, I split up my run, 5 miles on the the treadmill before work, and then another 5 with my friend Vicki outside over lunch. The temperature was about 15 degrees, feels like 5 degrees. 9:40 min/mile average. Trails were ‘greasy’ with snow, which definitely adds a challenge. It was lovely to run outside though, especially with a friend.
Friday: After successfully splitting up my run the day before, I decided to do the same for my long run. I had 5 miles easy to warm-up, so I did those outside with Vicki.
Then I came home, changed out of ALL the layers into shorts and a tank, and finished the workout portion on the treadmill, which was 10x(1/2 mile at marathon effort, 1/2 mile easy) + 1 mile cool-down. 16 miles total for the day.
The idea of this last long run workout was supposed to be to really “feel out” marathon effort, without looking at my watch. But that doesn’t really work when doing it on the treadmill since obviously I know exactly how fast I’m going. So…not really a success, but what do you do? Winter running in Minnesota, right? I knew I couldn’t really do marathon effort in the cold and snow and my coach agreed that the treadmill was a better option for this one.
I think I need to move somewhere warmer!
Our NYE was very low-key. I think I made it to 10:30 pm….close enough! Hung out with my two favorite party animals.
Saturday: Saturday was my rest day, which was grand, as it was -12 actual temp with “feels like” of -31. Yowsa. We did bundle up the pups for a short walk. It is that time of year that they need to wear their booties. Vizslas aren’t exactly cold weather pups!
The sun was shining and it wasn’t too bad, but I was happy to stay inside the rest of the day, cleaning and organizing. Nothing wrong with starting out the year with a rest day. Just as important as all the miles earlier in the week.
I did do some lower body + core on the Peloton app, but otherwise a must needed rest day from running.
Sunday: Another brutally cold day in Minnesota meant more miles on the treadmill. 8 miles, 9 min/mile average. Sweaty mess. All this treadmill time is a good opportunity to test out all the hot weather clothes!
So much treadmill time means a lot of TV! I’ve been watching a few documentaries (The Alpinist, Murderer Next Door, Dead Asleep, Explained) and some other random stuff (The Great, Yellowjackets, Station Eleven). Running out of options though- open to suggestions, though I feel like I’ve watched it all at this point, ha!
Summary: 61.5 miles, all but 10 on the treadmill.
And that’s a wrap on training two weeks out from marathon #38! As I mentioned in my 2021 recap, I’ll be running Boston again in April, which will hopefully be marathon #39. I feel like I should do something grand for #40, right? To be determined..
